Recent Acquisitions: 1871 $3 Gold Indian Princess NGC MS65 PL (Proof-like)

Monday, September 16, 2013 4:40:33 PM America/Chicago

In 1871, the mintage of the $3 Gold piece dropped by more than two-thirds to levels not seen since 1854 and 1865. The finest known example is a single PCGS MS67 that once belonged to the Harry Bass collection, which set an auction record of $41,400 in 1999. PCGS currently values that coin at $95,000. The coin being offered is superbly struck with well detailed devices and obvious proof-like contrast on obverse and reverse, making this coin a one of a kind specimen graded by NGC MS65 PL (Prooflike). It is the finest known Proof-like, Second Finest known overall. It should also  be noted that it is the tenth lowest mintage of the entire Mint State $3 Gold Indian Princess series.
